Kartik Month Seva for Laddu Gopal: Deepdaan, Damodar Lila & Festive Poshak

Kartik is one of the most beloved months for Krishna devotees. It is also called Damodar month, remembering the lila in which Mother Yashoda bound little Krishna with a rope — and so it feels especially close to every home that serves Laddu Gopal, our own little Damodar.

Offering a lamp every evening

The heart of Kartik seva is deepdaan — offering a small ghee lamp to Thakurji each evening. Many families wave the lamp gently while singing the Damodarashtakam, the eight prayers glorifying Lord Damodar. Even children can offer a lamp, which makes this a lovely seva for the whole family.

  • Use a small clay or brass diya with ghee and a cotton wick.
  • Keep the flame at a safe distance from Thakurji’s poshak, flowers and curtains.
  • Never leave a lit lamp unattended near fabric.

Govardhan Puja and Annakut

Govardhan Puja, the day after Diwali, falls in Kartik. Devotees remember how Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill to shelter the people of Vraja, and offer an Annakut — a “mountain” of many preparations — to Him. It is one of the grandest days of the year for Laddu Gopal’s shringar.

For Annakut, many families choose a rich festive poshak in gold, maroon or peacock tones, with a matching pagdi, mala and bansuri. Order early — festive poshaks and shringar sets sell out in the weeks before Diwali.

Dressing Thakurji as the weather cools

Kartik mornings and nights begin to turn cool across most of India. A cotton-silk poshak works well in the daytime; for early-morning mangala aarti and late evenings, a velvet or lined poshak — and in colder regions, a small woolen shawl — keeps Him cosy.

A simple daily rhythm for Kartik

  • Morning: gentle bath, fresh poshak and shringar, bhog.
  • Evening: deepdaan with Damodarashtakam, a sweet offering.
  • Weekly: wash and air His daily poshaks; keep a festive set ready for Govardhan Puja.

Customs vary between families and sampradayas — follow the guidance of your own tradition and teachers. Whatever you offer with love, Thakurji accepts.
